MICHAEL G. CALIFANO is Senior Counsel at Lauro Law Firm. Mr. Califano was born in Bronx, New York, but has spent most of his life in the Tampa Bay area. He received his undergraduate education from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.
Mr. Califano attended law school at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. While there, he received Book Awards in his Legal Research and Writing I and Corporations courses. In his final year of law school, he interned at Bay Area Legal Services. At Bay Area Legal Services, Mr. Califano conducted research, drafted internal memoranda, and participated in weekly Family Law team meetings.
As senior counsel, Mr. Califano has had the opportunity to draft and prepare motions, conduct voluminous electronic document reviews, participate in extensive pretrial discovery and trial preparation, conduct client and witness interviews, and partake in trial. He has also prepared counsel for and attended civil depositions and served as local counsel in several federal civil cases.
Mr. Califano helped draft an appellate brief for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in connection with civil litigation arising from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Mr. Califano also served as co-lead counsel in a civil matter before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He obtained a settlement in that case, which involved injuries sustained on board a cruise ship. He recently participated in the federal criminal trial of a former executive of a health maintenance organization, as well as a criminal appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
In 2012, Mr. Califano attended the NITA Building Trial Skills Program in San Francisco, California and Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College programs in Atlanta, Georgia and Grapevine, Texas.
